Community Outreach
The goal of Community Outreach is to encourage students to use their time, talents and resources to glorify God and be a blessing to others in our school community, our city, and our world. Students plan and take part in ministries on campus as well as have the opportunity to oversee and develop off-campus mercy projects. Below are descriptions of past Community Outreach ministry opportunities:
- Community Outreach has partnered with Crossroads Kids Club. Each week about ten of our high school students are small group leaders in an after school Bible club in the U-46 school district.
- Community Outreach has volunteered the past two years for the Ride for Refuge. For this event, we minister at a ride station that serves refreshment and encouragement to bicyclists riding 5, 15 or 30 miles to raise funds that provide support for displaced and vulnerable people worldwide.
- Since last fall, we have been volunteering once a month at Vineyard Church in Elgin serving breakfast before school to some of the less fortunate in our downtown area, many of which are homeless. We will be leading a warm clothing drive this month. One of the many needs of the people are to have warm clothes and socks.
- We make a yearly trip to Feed My Starving Children to package food to send to children and families in underdeveloped countries all over the world. Before we make this trip, we do fundraisers in order to make a donation to help with the cost of the food we package.
- We have had a great partnership with Illinois Park School for the
last five years. Illinois Park school is an early childhood school in U-46 that serves preschool and kindergarten children, some of which are “at risk” and special needs students. At Christmas we have the amazing opportunity of being able to take each child in the school a wrapped present. Kohl’s department store has donated approximately 500 books yearly, and then the Community Outreach students, along with the help of our elementary classes and middle school homerooms wrap all 500 books. The week before Christmas break, we made a trip to deliver the books and share the love of Christ with these precious children. - We visit Illinois Park School again in the spring to have a Fun Fair for their students. Community Outreach raises money to provide a moon jump and a fun snack for the day for 500 students. The high school students run game stations and play with the children.
- We plan canned food drives that assist in replenishing the shelves at the Illinois Food Bank.
- Many elementary classrooms take turns on a monthly basis visiting our neighbors at the Apostolic Resthaven facility located across our parking lot. The elderly residents who live there look forward to the visits from our elementary students who come and participate in many different kinds of events with them. From creating cards and celebrating holidays to reading and singing together, the children of WCS follow God's leading in ministering to these wonderful people who have become our friends. Weekly bowling with our fourth and fifth grade students is a highlight for the residents.
- Warrior Prayer Army - Each Friday high school students meet at lunch to share prayer requests and pray for the needs of our students, school and community. There are prayer request boxes at the high school and middle school desks to allow the entire middle and high school to participate.
