Fine Arts Electives

Westminster Christian School offers several specialized music courses including Music Technology, Music Theory and Music Appreciation. Mr. Dan Price, our instrumental director, is the instructor for these courses.

 

Music Theory - This course introduces the classical theory behind musical structure and performance.  Lessons will cover major and minor scales, key relations, chord structures and analysis, musical form, and common practice part-writing techniques.  Students will develop basic aural and song writing skills. The course introduces the students to the music software program Sibelius.  The final course project will be an original composition transcribed on Sibelius.

 

Music Technology - Students will gain a working knowledge of how computer technology has been integrated into the recording and music publishing industry.  Students will work with the recording software program Ableton Live. Projects include recording, editing, mixing and burning a song to a CD.

 

Music Appreciation - This course is designed for students who are interested in learning how Western music has developed throughout the years. Students will learn how to listen for enjoyment and understanding. They will study the fundamentals of music notation. Students explore and deepen their knowledge of what music is and how it has developed from its ancient Biblical roots. The course provides a general overview of music history, particularly Western European and American music traditions that influence music today.

 

Acting Appreciation - The course introduces advanced acting techniques through a study of various theatrical genres. Students read, research, and prepare dialogues and monologues from Greek and Roman theatre, medieval morality plays, Shakespeare, restoration theatre, and American musical theatre. Attention is given to understanding the basics of playwriting and technical theatre design.
