High School Social Events
This week focuses on school spirit for current students and includes our WCS alumni as well. The week begins with a decorating party over the weekend where each class competes for most creative and festive theme décor. Each day during the week features a dress-up theme chosen by students, as well as some type of class competition in the afternoons. Athletic competitions at all levels including volleyball, golf, cross country and soccer are well attended, and the homecoming court is elected and announced at the weekend’s sporting events. Alumni are encouraged to attend the events, with lunch usually served for WCS graduates during Saturday’s soccer game.
Homecoming Dance:
This event is the first large social experience of the year. Our purpose is to provide an environment where students can have the opportunity to socialize in a chaperoned setting, and to learn how to relate to their peers through more mature social activities. All freshmen through senior students are invited to attend. Students are encouraged to dress up and be a part of a social time outside of the academic setting. Students meet in advance with advisors to discuss expectations for the dance and proper etiquette. Those who wish to bring a guest from outside WCS must obtain a permission form.
Sadie Hawkins Event:
The purpose of Sadie Hawkins is to provide an opportunity for students to dress up and have a social time outside of school. It is open to freshman through seniors; students are welcome to attend as individuals or as part of a group. Our goal is to provide a transition from large group activities in elementary school to learning how to relate in more complex social settings as they mature. This event and Homecoming are the two major social events open to freshmen and sophomores. The event includes dinner and an activity; some past venues have included Joe’s Be-Bop Café at Navy Pier and Pinstripes in South Barrington.
Junior/Senior Prom:
This formal event is for junior and senior students. The evening includes dinner and a dance; it is held at a local banquet facility such as The Stonegate in Hoffman Estates, The Centre in downtown Elgin, or a boat cruise in Chicago.
Other Student Government sponsored events include such activities as pajama movie nights, the annual Chili Bowl, blood drives, and laser tag lock-ins.
